Key Components of Treatment

Education
New Hope Heartland provides on-site educational services year-round through written and signed agreement with the local school district, while New Hope Carolinas offers an independent year round, on-site school accredited through AdvancEd.

Each of New Hope’s education departments has an established general curriculum guide for all courses taught based on state curriculum standards. Upon admission, each student is given an educational assessment (Brigance, PIAT-R, or WJ-R) to determine his/her level of academic functioning. Coursework is based on the student’s transcript, aptitude, and grade level. Certified teachers provide instruction based on the established curriculum using the assessment results and other educational information. Modifications are made, as necessary, to meet the needs of the student.

At the time of referral, if the student is certified as being eligible for special education, a copy of the Individual Education Plan (IEP) must be forwarded to New Hope to determine the ability of the program to meet the student’s needs. New Hope operates under a policy that requires the program to provide feedback to the referral source as to any modifications needed in the IEP prior to placement. Any required changes to an IEP are made through an IEP meeting with the school district supporting the student.

Upon admission to New Hope, the student is assigned to a distinct program based upon his/her individual clinical and treatment needs. Educational needs of students are met based on their functioning and grade level.
Vision, hearing, and speech screenings are conducted on each resident at admission. A determination is also made as to whether the student requires further psycho-educational testing to ensure appropriate placement.

Parent/guardian consent is to be obtained for any additional assessments or evaluations that are deemed necessary in order to meet the educational needs of the student. If speech services are deemed to be necessary by the IEP Team, services will be provided on site by a certified speech pathologist. Additional services, should they be required, are not included in the daily rate.
If the student is a special education student with a current IEP, that IEP is implemented or revised as necessary. The home school district and New Hope staff are responsible for ensuring an appropriate IEP for students enrolled in their local education agency. The local school district and New Hope staff are responsible for ensuring an appropriate education plan for students enrolled in the local school district. For regular education students, an individual academic plan is developed to include goals and strategies necessary to ensure the student receives an appropriate education.

The following classifications are served by a certified Special Education Teacher: Mental Disabilities (MD), Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD), Emotional Disabilities (ED), Speech or Language Impairments (SLI), Visual Impairments (VI), Orthopedic Impairments (OI), Other Health Impairments (OHI), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Autism, and Multiple Disabilities.

The student-to-teacher ratio is generally no higher than 10:1, with a typical class size of less than 10 students. The New Hope employs regular and special education certified teachers and teachers eligible certification.

A New Hope teacher, in accordance with the grading policies of the district, assigns individual grades to students in all courses. New Hope maintains attendance and grades on each student in a student database and in individual teacher grade books.

New Hope offers a twelve-month school year with four eleven-week quarters separated by two-week classroom breaks. Students attend classes in the core subjects along with appropriate electives throughout the year. Electives are offered in art, music, independent living, home economics, and vocational training. During two-week breaks, students are actively involved in vocational and educational opportunities on site and in the community. Field trips to cultural events, museums, historical sites, and libraries as well as on-site career days are included in the students’ curriculum.

New Hope offers an on-site student library in order to provide a learning environment for students. Research and a wide variety of other reading materials are available to students. The county bookmobile comes on site once a month and provides students access to additional books and periodicals. Students also have access to computers in the classroom for academic purposes.

New Hope offers a variety of vocational opportunities for eligible students including paid positions in dietary, landscaping, maintenance, and an on-site library. We enroll eligible students into Goodwill Industries vocational classes, and we offer 4-H activities and cooking classes through relationships with university extension services.

Documentation of student academic and behavioral progress is captured in education progress notes completed twice a month. IEP updates are completed quarterly. Copies of the IEP updates are sent to appropriate individuals responsible for ensuring that the student receives an appropriate education.
Students at New Hope may receive credits for a high school diploma or certificate of attendance based on recommended grades and coursework completed at New Hope and in compliance with the school district requirements in which the student is enrolled. The district in which the student is enrolled will make the final determination of credits or units of study awarded to the student.
