Phases of Treatment Historical Phase During the Historical Phase, the resident’s exploration of their personal history is the primary focus of treatment. To examine his past, the resident must be willing to explore potentially difficult, emotionally laden experiences; and he must be honest with himself, his peers, and the Treatment Team. The goal of this exploration into history is to learn more about the family relationships and critical events that have influenced his life. The major treatment task in this phase is the Autobiography, a detailed account of the youth’s life. Key components of the life history are family experiences, early memories, perceived strengths and problematic behaviors, peer relationships, and school experiences. Completion of the comprehensive Autobiography requires independent work as well as assistance, criticism, and encouragement from peers and clinical staff. When he has reviewed this material thoroughly with his individual therapist, discussed excerpts in his Process Group, and presented selections to the approval of the therapeutic community and family or treatment ally, he can request to move to the next phase. |
