STARTING POINTE
Treatment for Boys with Offensive Sexual Behaviors (IQ75 and above)

The Starting Pointe Program offers a comprehensive treatment approach specifically designed to treat adolescents who have demonstrated sexually offensive behavior, resulting in the need for a highly structured, clinically intensive residential treatment regime.

The Starting Pointe treatment approach begins with a comprehensive, strength-based assessment, and includes individual, group and family interventions designed to facilitate cognitive restructuring, values clarification and social skills training, empathy and impulse control enhancement, arousal reconditioning and relapse prevention strategies. Emphasis is placed on developing the internal skills and external supports essential for success as outlined in the Good Lives Model.

Individual therapy, specialized treatment groups, covert sensitization, and polygraph are some of the major tools employed. Throughout the treatment process, emphasis is placed on providing the patient and family education and therapy regarding the nature, progression and management of sexual aggression. Group modalities in relapse prevention, understanding trauma, and healthy sexuality are designed to help the adolescent develop strategies to avoid re-offending. Patients are expected to accept responsibility for their behavior, increase their level of honesty in their lives, and continually work to gain the capacity for empathy for those they have harmed.

The highly structured milieu and our well-trained staff provide round-the-clock supervision and guidance necessary for effective treatment. Psychiatric services are provided, along with a comprehensive array of clinical, educational, and recreational services.

Although we currently do not conduct formal risk assessments with actual predictive scores, we do utilize the Juvenile Sex Offender Assessment Protocol (JSOAP) to assess the static and dynamic variables associated with sexually aggressive behaviors, in order to target treatment interventions and complete discharge recommendations. We also provide the Abel Assessment of Sexual Interest (AASI) screenings as needed to clarify arousal patterns. When appropriate, the program will provide victim clarification and reconciliation in order to reunify residents with their families. All clinicians are master’s level, and represent a variety of disciplines. Collectively, we agree with and abide by all of the standards developed by ATSA.

Sexually offensive or compulsive behavior is complex and requires strong, multi-faceted intervention due to its potential criminal consequences and persistence into adulthood. The Starting Pointe Program offers an opportunity for residents to accept responsibility for their behavior and develop more appropriate coping strategies in order to better manage their sexually aggressive behavior.

The Starting Pointe Program utilizes a multifaceted approach to the treatment of sexually offensive behaviors. Residents are encouraged to assume responsibility and accountability for their behaviors, replace maladaptive thinking, and develop respect for the rights and needs of others. Each component of the program - residential, clinical, vocational, educational, and recreational – is specifically designed to address the treatment needs of sexually aggressive residents.

While adolescents who engage in sexually aggressive behavior share many characteristics, we recognize that each resident is an individual with unique treatment needs. Each resident is assessed on major life domains (social, emotional, spiritual, etc) in order to develop an individualized treatment plan. Progress and readiness for discharge will be assessed and reviewed with the resident and Treatment Team, including the guardian, on a quarterly basis.

We believe that residents should be served in the least restrictive environment. Residents will be recommended for discharge and continued treatment in a less restrictive setting once they have demonstrated that they no longer pose a significant risk to the community, are able to demonstrate insight into their problem behaviors, and prove they can effectively utilize comprehensive relapse prevention strategies. Our program is designed to maximize treatment benefits through the intensity of the service delivery model.
