TRIAD
Treatment for Boys with Offensive Sexual Behaviors                                     and Lower Cognitive Functioning (IQ45-75)

The Triad Program offers a comprehensive treatment approach specifically designed for MR/DD juvenile sexually aggressive males. All patients referred to the Triad Program have documented mental retardation and/or developmental disability and have demonstrated a pattern of sexual behavior problems resulting in the need for a high-management residential treatment intervention.

The clinical programming emphasizes education in healthy sexuality and improving socialization skills. Individual therapy and process and relapse prevention groups help the patient develop strategies to avoid re-offending. Emphasis is placed on developing the internal skills and external supports essential for success as outlined in the Good Lives Model. Patients are encouraged to accept responsibility for their behavior and continually work to increase their capacity for empathy. The program includes a highly structured milieu specifically designed to monitor and redirect sexually inappropriate behavior, along with a comprehensive array of clinical, educational, and recreational services.

The Triad Program’s guiding principle is to provide effective, highly specialized treatment. The New Hope treatment approach represents a belief that offensive sexual behavior is complex, requiring a strong, multifaceted intervention due to its criminal consequences and persistence through adulthood. The primary goal of the Triad Program is to reduce the risk of re-offending and prepare the MR/DD patient for less restrictive community reintegration that includes aftercare services.

In order to achieve this goal, the Triad Program has modified typical sexually inappropriate behavior interventions to include extensive experiential exercises and behavioral rehearsal to help actualize concepts for the MR/DD population. Communication systems are individualized. Information is presented in small increments and through a variety of modalities to reinforce learning and increase the likelihood of generalization of skills to different environments.

The Triad Program provides a highly structured day where therapeutic interventions are occurring continuously. Activities are goal driven within small therapeutic groups of 8-10 called “coveys.” Behaviors are treated with consistency and are modified using the least restrictive support methods that are effective for each patient. The covey members spend all of their time within their covey community, except during the school day. Because of the wide range of intellectual abilities and needs, students are placed in classroom environments that are best suited for their individual achievement and success.

The Triad Program at New Hope is designed to provide a residential therapeutic milieu for individuals with mental retardation/developmental disabilities who are sexually aggressive and may have additional general psychiatric issues. The program provides services and supports to individuals with mental retardation/developmental disabilities and their families which enable them to make informed personal choices that lead to an improved quality of life and meaningful participation in their communities

The Triad Program utilizes a multifaceted approach to the treatment of sexually aggressive behaviors. Patients are encouraged to assume responsibility and accountability for their offending behaviors, to replace the maladaptive thinking that contributed to their offending, and to develop respect for the rights and needs of others. Each component of the program - residential, clinical, vocational, educational, and recreational - addresses the treatment needs of sexually aggressive individuals.

The Triad Program level system is part of each patient’s treatment plan. The system is designed to reward use of adaptive, pro-social, appropriate behaviors and is a positive therapeutic method of behavior support. In addition, it is designed to be flexible enough to account for individual differences while providing structure within the covey to reduce or eliminate challenging behaviors which may be the focus of treatment or may otherwise interfere with attainment of treatment goals.

The Triad residential milieu is highly structured, and staff are specifically trained in the supervision of sexually aggressive patients. The program is self-contained. The patient’s clinical, educational, recreational, and vocational needs are met within the treatment milieu.

The Triad Program operates on the belief that successful treatment of the MR/DD sexually aggressive patient can only occur within an environment of care that encourages growth and development to help displace the inappropriate behaviors. Such an environment recognizes the unique worth of each individual and encourages development of respect for self and others. The program encourages work toward development of skills based upon capabilities and interests. The environment is safe, consistent, well supervised, and highly structured.
