Mental Health Awareness Month – Our History & Mission

May 10, 2023 Uncategorized

Rock Hill, S.C., May 10, 2023 – The month of May marks mental health awareness month. New Hope Treatment Centers has been providing behavioral health services to adolescents and their families to combat mental health issues since 1984.

Our Founder and Chairman Emeritus, the late George H. Orvin, M.D., was a pioneer in the field of adolescent psychiatry. As Chief of the Adolescent Psychiatry Department at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) from 1967-89, he was recognized internationally for his innovative and comprehensive clinical approach to treating emotionally disturbed children, adolescents and their families.  Dr. Orvin’s vision took adolescent psychiatry out of long-term, acute hospital settings and into family-focused residential treatment settings.

As New Hope has evolved through the years, it has worked to maintain Dr. Orvin’s philosophy of care, that family involvement and individualized care is central to change in all levels of programming. In order to respond effectively and provide the proper care that is required, New Hope assembled a group of mental health professionals who understand and are committed to this concept of excellent service delivery.  These professionals include psychiatrists, counselors, social workers, nurses, nurse practitioners, teachers, recreational therapists, residential counselors, dieticians, and spirituality counselors, all housed at the Rock Hill, S.C. facility.

In 2005, New Hope Treatment Centers went through a restructuring of the company in order to focus our clinical efforts on our facility in Rock Hill.  This allowed New Hope to continue meeting our mission and vision with efficiency and effectiveness.  Our commitment to providing quality services to emotionally challenged children in a manner which protects dignity, restores pride, develops life skills, and teaches adaptive health living, remains our top priority.  This restructuring has proven to be highly beneficial to the ongoing success of New Hope Treatment Centers.

New Hope is here to help young people change their lives and we take pride in our ability to treat some of the most traumatized, and often marginalized, youth populations in our system of care. We know that far too often our kids are given a label and given a message that their life is going to be limited by their mental health challenges. Our team of professionals at New Hope is here to help instill the message that every youth’s life matters, that their future matters and that their future has boundless potential. We maintain this mission, not just throughout mental health awareness month, but 24 hours each day, seven days each week, 365 days each year.
