Education Department Hosts Poetry Slam for Residents
Rock Hill, S.C., April 24, 2024 –New Hope Treatment Center’s Education Department hosted a poetry slam for the kids on Tuesday, April 23.
To commemorate National Poetry Month, the department, which is led by the Director of Education, Joanna Fielder, coordinated the event for our youth. Ms. Keysha Page, Education Transition Coordinator, spearheaded the efforts, receiving and approving each poem entry. It was a great vehicle for everyone to showcase their creativity and express themselves in a unique way.
The topic was “Conquer Your Fear”. It encouraged the students that participated to write a poem about fear or an obstacle in their life and how they have or plan to overcome it.
The poems focused on the topic and were submitted as the original pieces written and presented live by the student. Each performance was limited to three minutes and the poems were presented in multiple styles. Out of the 36 entries, the Top 3 were students of Mr. Joel Crimm’s (Transformations 1), Ms. Ford’s Transformations class and Ms. Icey’s Starting Point class.
In addition, the contest was live streamed on Zoom, allowing staff to join the fun. The students showed tremendous humility and vulnerability and did an outstanding job.
